It seems Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed game will leave the open worlds behind in favour of a more linear gameplay experience.
The Assassin’s Creed franchise is now known for its vast open worlds though some fans believe this has led to the series’ downfall.

Many argued Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was simply too big to be fun, which apparently impacted development of Star Wars Outlaws’ open world as a result.

As luck would have it though, Ubisoft found success in the following game, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which downsized the open world and focused more on a narrative-driven, traditional Assassin’s Creed experience.
Back in 2022, Marc-Alexis Côté, vice president executive producer of the Assassin's Creed series told IGN Assassin’s Creed Hexe is “a different type of game” and “not everything has to be a 150-hour RPG, right?”
Now, new details seemingly confirm the game will follow in Mirage’s footsteps and be more linear in design.
As reported by Insider Gaming, Assassin’s Creed Hexe will star a female protagonist, be set in 16th-century Europe, and will dive into the supernatural elements of the series’ world.

The protagonist, Elsa, will have an array of magical abilities, including the ability to control a cat for reconnaissance as well as distractions for the soldiers hunting her down.
It’s also believed the game will have a fear-system reminiscent of the Jack The Ripper DLC for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.
This will see enemies and civilians become increasingly wary of Elsa, as she’s believed by many to be a witch which was considered illegal at the time.
Of course, as always, take this with a pinch of salt as Ubisoft is yet to officially confirm any of these details at the time of writing.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe will follow Assassin’s Creed Red, which releases later this year, and will supposedly launch sometime in 2026.
