We have all experienced some heartbreaking moments in our video game careers, but fans have decided that Arthur’s final ride in Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most emotional of all time.
Red Dead Redemption 2 follows the story of the rough but kind-hearted Arthur Morgan, a gunslinger who travels alongside his adopted family across America’s unforgiving heartland. Although the game features fun combat, an engaging story and so many secrets that are still being found five years later, the main thing that sticks in players’ minds is the ending.

The end scenes of Red Dead Redemption 2 are some of the most emotional moments in video game history as we see Arthur Morgan succumb to tuberculosis and quietly pass away beneath the sunrise (he can also get killed if he has low honour). Before he reaches his final resting place, he goes on one last ride on his horse with the melancholic Unshaken soundtrack playing over it.
The conversation was prompted after one Reddit user shared the moment earlier this week. “Late to the party but this "Unshaken" ride in RDR2 made me more emotional than any game ever has,” they wrote on the r/gaming sub-Reddit. “Yeah, that's a rough one” agreed one viewer. “It's weird because by that point you've known for hours how it has to end for Arthur but that's when you realise this is it and it hits so hard.”
Another user commented on the moment Arthur says good-bye to his horse which, ‘fun’ fact, only triggers if you have a max bond with them. “When Arthur’s horse gets shot and he says, 'thank you'. I definitely shed a tear,” they said. “Most beautiful game ever made - story, characters, action, animation, music. I hope there will be something like it again soon, but I'm afraid there won’t be. I wish I could play it again for the first time.”

Despite it being five years since it was first released, Red Dead Redemption 2 is still hailed as the last video game to blow players away. With a heartbreaking ending like that, it’s really no wonder.
