Ah, GTA 6. Gamers all over the world have been waiting not-so-patiently for the release of Rockstar Games’ next Grand Theft Auto title for years now - a new game was confirmed to be in development by the company earlier this year (albeit not with an official name yet), but as we approach the 10 year anniversary of GTA 5, it’s understandable that fans are wondering where on earth the new one is (be sure to take a look at our guide for everything we know so far).
It’s no secret that GTA 6 is probably going to be one of the biggest games of all time, both in terms of hype and its actual scale. A huge leak, which surfaced online in September as a result of a network intrusion, saw gameplay footage and details about the game flood the internet, including (allegedly) map coordinates. When lined up next to the GTA 5 map, it looks like it'll be absolutely massive - it’s little wonder that the game is taking so long.
With that in mind, one of the questions that many people have been asking is just how much money is Rockstar Games spending on GTA 6? While this isn’t the sort of information that the company tends to freely admit, we may already have the answer - and it’s apparently in the billions.

Following that aforementioned large leak, it was claimed that GTA 6 may have a budget of $2 billion (thanks, Sportskeeda). This number is unprecedented - to put it into perspective, the most recent game in the Grand Theft Auto series, GTA 5, apparently cost around $265 million. Obviously, this is still an enormous amount of money, but it's over seven times less than the supposed budget for GTA 6. In fact, in terms of known budget figures, no other game has ever had a development cost in the billions before, so if this is true, it would be record breaking.
It’s claimed, however, that GTA 6’s supposed $2 billion budget isn’t all going towards the game’s development. Reportedly, the budget could cover everything from the marketing, publication and distribution, to the development of any additional DLC content and a potential online mode. If this is true, it sounds like the company are making some big plans to support the game into the future, perhaps for even longer than they have GTA 5.
At this time though, the $2 billion budget for GTA 6 hasn’t been officially confirmed - if we get word from Rockstar Games, we’ll be sure to update this article accordingly.
