Ready to feel old? Later this month, on 29 November, Far Cry 3 will turn 10 years old. Ubisoft’s open-world FPS took players to the tropical Rook Islands, and threw them into the shoes of Jason Brody on a quest to save his friends.
Right from its release, the game has been a fan-favourite entry in the series, and that’s not changed at all in the last decade. In fact, on Reddit, many have been singing its praises once more, with some going as far as to call it a “masterpiece”.
Want a blast from the past? Take a look at Far Cry 3’s original trailer below.
“The first word that comes to my mind when I want to describe the game is ‘masterpiece’,” Detri_Mantela wrote. “The storyline definitely is the main reason Far Cry 3 belongs to [sic] one of the best games ever made. In a weird way the changes that happen to Jason Brody’s mentality and persona happen to you as well. Every character you meet is interesting and alive.”

“Absolute masterpiece. It was almost a curse for the Far Cry series because they haven’t added much since then,” agreed SenorMeeseeks27. “But my god, FC3 was easily my GOTY when it came out. I just absolutely loved everything. The story and characters were great, but I especially loved that everything had a purpose. You hunt animals to get their pelts to upgrade your storage and capacity, not just for the hell of it. Every type of kill and action gets you XP. Just a phenomenal game.”
“Awh man, one of my favourite games ever,” added BrandonD40. “I really loved the storyline [and] characters when I first played this in 2012. I still do, though I kinda figure it’s partly nostalgia at this point.”
While players have a lot of praise for the game in general, some was directed specifically towards one character in particular - Vaas (and more notably, his actor Michael Mando). “In all the video games that I’ve played since ~2010, Vaas is hands down the best character I’ve experienced, and it’s not even close,” diggee said. “I know I’m biassed but Michael Mando’s acting was as good as the acting you see in Oscar winning movies if not better. Michael single handedly made the game so much more engaging, every time he would come on the screen I would sit up straight and just admire his performance.”
Far Cry 3 is currently the highest-scoring game in the entire series on Metacritic, with its PS3 and Xbox 360 versions having critic scores of 90 and 91 respectively (earning them the elusive Must-Play badge). When or if we ever get Far Cry 7, we can only hope it’ll be as good as this old favourite.
