We’ve begun to see a shift in Xbox exclusives making their way over to PlayStation with titles such as Grounded and Sea of Thieves. It’s odd to see the rivals come together and bring great titles to a larger audience, but many gamers have started fearing the worst and wondering if Xbox will soon give up developing new hardware.
This may not be the case as Phil Spencer, boss of all things Xbox, has commented on the sudden decision while talking to Polygon. He ultimately looks to Gen Z saying, “All of their stuff is available wherever they want.”
Sea of Thieves is just one Xbox game to be released on PlayStation
It makes sense to some degree, we all have different media spread over several devices nowadays, whether that’s across iPhone and Android, or Fortnite on PlayStation and Xbox using cross-progression. This seems like a chance to capitalise on younger generations and how they use technology, “This notion that Xbox can only be this one device that plugs into a television isn’t something we see in the Gen Z research. Because nothing else is like that for them.” said Spencer.

This idea to pivot and place their games on other consoles isn’t new - when Microsoft bought Mojang, they began overseeing Minecraft across several devices. From a financial standpoint, it makes sense to spread out their games across platforms in order to tap into a larger audience. When talking about big Xbox franchises such as Gears of War, Starfield, and the upcoming Indiana Jones game, Spencer didn’t rule out seeing them on PlayStation.
Spencer wants to make it clear that there are no evil plans going on in the background by saying, “Every decision we make is to make Xbox stronger in the long run. It doesn’t mean everyone’s going to agree with every decision we make. But it is fundamental for how we make decisions.”
