When it comes to iconic villains, few do it quite as well as the Star Wars universe providing some of the most legendary characters of all time.
Of course, the most likely Star Wars villain that comes to mind will be Darth Vader, arguably the most iconic villain in all of cinema history. The aura of Darth Vader was attempted to be replicated in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens with Kylo Ren.

Though to be fair, despite the best efforts, Kylo Ren never reached the legendary status of Darth Vader, a Sith Lord whom he very much admired and wanted to replicate. That being said, it’s a tall ask for any wannabe Sith Lord to achieve a similar status as ole’ Darthy.

While mostly having a similar dark, moody tone, a common trend of a Sith Lords is a well-designed mask to let everyone know that a badass has just entered the building, but a good Sith Lord mask has more than one purpose other than gaining notoriety.
Sure, a Sith Lord mask - or even ones worn by Inquistors - allow the user to hide their indentity. After all, if an enemy knew for certain who was behind the mask, it could blow the door wide open for all sorts of tactical exploitation.
Of course, helmets also have a tactical advantage by protecting a Sith Lord's head in battle. A Sith Lord would be able to deflect laser beams and bullets from firing guns with the power of the Force, but if a Jedi were to get in close and swipe them with a lightsaber, a well-constructed mask might even save their life in that brief moment.
A Sith Lord mask can also strike fear into enemies. However, perhaps above all else, the most important and lesser known reason that masks are worn is that they allow the user to block out distractions, both via sight and sound, deepening the user's connection to the Force. In turn, this intensifies their power and as we all know, every good villain needs to be powerful.
