Sometimes, the one pulling the strings works from the shadows rather than in plain view.
This is hardly a new concept for Star Wars; filled with twists and turns, it’s known for dramatic reveals.
Nevertheless, while we’re well versed in such trickery, few of us saw this coming.

Most fans would argue that Palpatine is the overarching villain of the entire Star Wars saga. Arguably, his ability to remain undiscovered for so long helped him establish such a strong foothold.
But what if we’ve all been so very wrong about this?

We’re not claiming Palpatine isn’t a villain but rather he was manipulated by an even greater force.

One Redditor believes they’ve pinpointed the real culprit.
“Darth Plagueis faked his death and possessed Palpatine afterwards,” they claim, “Which would make Plagueis the secret villain of the whole saga.
“After Palpatine backstabbed his mentor and murdered him, Plagueis' spirit saw the perfect opportunity to take over the other Sith's body, which helped him go by a different identity.”
Such a bold claim will always be met with a certain level of scepticism, however, while there are doubtful fans, others are quick to agree with this theory.

User Randomdigression said, “This is my new head canon. It quite possibly is ACTUAL canon, except that the movies don't quite state it explicitly enough. But this is perfect. Well done.”
Further adding weight to the validity of the argument is this comment from another saying, “Absolutely agree as I had the same idea a couple years ago [...] Part of the ritual used to transfer his essence to the apprentice.”
This is assuming you believe Plagueis is genuinely deceased, which is yet another theory that throws the cat amongst the pigeons.
Canonical Plagueis has been released, finally, but that isn’t to say that the Force hasn’t worked in mysterious ways before and/or since this latest development.
