General Grievous hasn’t always been a cyborg; he actually elected to be that way.
No great tragedy befell the character. Instead, his cyborg body was designed specifically so that it would rival the abilities of the jedi.
That’s according to information taken from Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars Visionaries.

Grievous isn’t force sensitive, but he has trained in the ways of the lightsaber and, of course, he has the advantage that his cyborg body allows him to wield four at once.
In his cyborg form, Grievous also stands at just over seven feet tall.
Grievous belongs to the Kaleesh species which admittedly hasn’t been explored a ton in the main Star Wars canon, but that’s enough information that we can gauge what the character looked like pre-transformation.
ICYMI: Andor returns for its second season next month, debuting three episodes a week.
Concept art of Grievous’ original appearance was recently shared to Reddit and believe it or not, fans actually think he looked cooler pre-transformation which is saying something because Grievous’ cyborg form is pretty damn popular.

“General Grievous was cooler before he was a cyborg,” wrote Reddit user hawkbone.
“Holy s**t,” remarked a stunned NinjaTB.
“General Grievous was the coolest design anyone ever made,” added another.

While we know that Grievous is Kaleesh, the rest of the character’s backstory has purposefully been kept murky.
It’s been suggested that his hatred may stem from the jedi’s role in the enslavement of the Kaleesh people, or that Grievous may resent the jedi for rejecting him due to his lack of force sensitivity.
Neither account has been made canon despite both reasons being referenced in various Star Wars media.
Grievous remains a man, or cyborg, of mystery.
