Star Wars fans horrified to discover how much The Acolyte actually cost to make

Star Wars fans horrified to discover how much The Acolyte actually cost to make

$670k per minute does sound like a little *too* much maybe...

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of months, then let me give you a little context before we continue: some folks really hate Disney’s latest Star Wars show The Acolyte.

Even though the show was relatively popular with critics, a lot of fans in general have been pretty vocal about their hate for it. Now to be fair to The Acolyte, it doesn’t seem like there’s much stuff Star Wars fans do actually like.

The hate for this show runs a little deeper than the usual kind of Star Wars fanboy hate though, and that only got worse once the show was recently cancelled.

Fans on the Star Wars subreddit have recently discovered exactly how much The Acolyte cost to make, and oh boy they had some opinions about it.

A recent post titled “The Acolyte cost a staggering $670k per minute of footage” has garnered over 11,000 upvotes over 2,000 comments, which should put things into perspective for you.

The chart itself that breaks down the costs seems to be fanmade, but it does line up with the information recently published by Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva.

Comments in the post itself were mostly just shocked that the budget of The Acolyte eclipsed every other Star Wars TV show produced so far.

“Amazing that Ahsoka cost half the rate per minute but felt so much bigger and more grand”, noted one comment, which is in reference to how Ahsoka cost $80 million less to produce than The Acolyte.

“Only delusional people think the show should have been renewed…” said another comment, “The budget involved, the mediocre return for that money, Disney would never renew this.”

To be completely fair, whichever side of the argument you’re on… it is hard to see how Disney would have justified producing a second season of The Acolyte with these kinds of returns.

At the end of the day, they bought the Star Wars IP to make money - not to make art. They’re not that kind of company, and they never will be.

Here’s hoping The Stranger makes a comeback in some kind of form though.
