With two Avengers films on the horizon, someone has to step up to lead the team in the absence of Steve Rogers’ Captain America.
So, it’s only natural for our new Captain America to raise the shield and guide the team in the battle against Doctor Doom, Anthony Mackie’s, Sam Wilson.
Will Sam Wilson take the serum to prove he's Captain America?
It has been reported by Maxblizz that Sam Wilson will lead the Avengers in Avengers: DOOMSDAY and Avengers: Secret Wars, even if Steve is back in the picture through Chris Evans’ return to the MCU.

It makes sense. Captain America has always been front and centre for Marvel, and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
As a user on Reddit says, “It was either Him or Carol,” referring to Captain Marvel being the other in line.
Personally, I’ve never been a big fan of Mackie stepping into the role of Captain America. I’d rep for my boy Bucky Barnes until I take my last breath.
It seems the community is pretty split on this too.

“We’ve not yet seen Sam actually demonstrate he can lead and inspire. His ‘do better’ speech was a huge turnoff to me. He’s great at one to one support,” said Afwife1992.
One user makes a very good point on this, “Without the super solider serum he’s leading beings who are magnitudes more powerful than he is. Steve Rogers could hang with all the heroes and the big bads.”
We don’t know that he isn’t gobbling that serum down in his first solo film, though, just putting that out there.
It’s hard to judge how Mackie will step up and carry the team, but let’s be honest, the films will be such ensemble projects there isn’t a leader until a speech is needed.

And maybe there won’t be one. Or it’ll be delivered by Steve Rogers or Tony Stark in their inevitable comebacks.
