Back in 2017, MCU hype was at an all-time high.
Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange had already hit cinemas the year before, and Disney was set to release high-grossing bangers like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War mere months down the line.
Which is why it’s kind of weird they cancelled the TV show New Warriors. They’d shot a pilot, it was testing well with audiences, and Disney+ was already set to launch.

Seems like it could have been a hit, so what happened?
Well, according to some now-deleted Tweets, showrunner Kevin Biegel stated that “A singular power that be killed the show. Because it was too gay. A rich, straight, Brentwood turd. He got fired for being vile at his company."
You’re saying Disney censored something for being gay? No way. The same Disney that recuts and censors LGBTQ+ stuff for overseas? I’m shocked.
It seems Disney hasn’t completely forgotten about the cancelled pilot at least - if news of an actor reprising their role from the show is anything to go by.

As it turns out, Milana Vayntrub (who played the character in the cancelled New Warriors pilot) has reprised her role as Squirrel Girl in NetEase’s latest game Marvel Rivals.
Milana Vayntrub’s Squirrel Girl was supposed to be the main character in New Warriors and even starred in its unaired pilot, but has since voiced the character in the Marvel Rising franchise.
She isn’t the only actor to reprise their role for the game either, as Josh Keaton previously played Iron Man in the 2022 game Midnight Suns and Yuri Lowenthal has played Spider-Man in literally dozens of series.
So does this mean that the New Warriors show might see the light of day?

Probably not, but hey, Vayntrub is great in the role so at least we got something out of its cancellation.
