The ending of Deadpool & Wolverine was initially going to be a bit different from what we saw in cinemas and what you can now catch on streaming.

According to editor Shane Reid, the final sequences originally featured the scene Ryan Reynolds ended up sharing on social media of Gambit standing before a sparkly multiverse gate.

Marvel will be on the big screen again next year with the team-up Thunderbolts*

This scene would have been one of three ending scenes during the credits, however, the editors and creative team didn’t want to disrupt the flow of what they already had.

What stayed intact was the comedic scene of Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm cussing up a, well, storm.

This, of course, followed the heartfelt montage of the 20th Century Fox X-Men movies and behind the scenes footage.

Reid confirmed that Gambit would have appeared as a third scene, however, “A rhythm to the end credit sequence that we had [was] the Legacy reel [which] was a really important part of the process.”

This makes a lot of sense given that the Deadpool films were never there to set up possible futures for its characters.

As Reid mentions, “We knew that we had this really wonderful mic-drop-coda with Johnny Storm that was going to close the film out. I think the Gambit Sparkle Circle feels like a traditional Marvel coda, and I think what these guys were always trying to do was sort of subvert the audience's expectations in that sense.”

This is why the scene was eventually left out. However, were it kept in, it certainly would have excited Marvel fans to no end.

It would have led to rampant speculation on Gambit’s future which could have muddied the plans for the MCU.

The futures of Deadpool and Wolverine are up in the air for now, however many believe we’ll see them again in Avengers: Secret Wars as The Multiverse Saga comes to a close.
