When it comes to hoarding and saving money, you would argue that The Hobbit’s Smaug wins and honestly, I wish I had his restraint when it comes to spending.
Especially when we learn how much gold Smaug actually had hidden within the Lonely Mountain.
Check out the trailer for The Hobbit below!
I don’t know about you but I am prone to spending a bit of money when I should be saving but in Tolkien’s The Hobbit, we are introduced to the fire-drake of the Third Age, Smaug who, after capturing the Lonely Mountain from the Dwarves after hearing of their amassed wealth, went on to be the proud “owner” of a whole lot of gold.

Of course, we all know what happens to Smaug when Thorin and Company, alongside help from Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf, enter the Lonely Mountain during the events of The Hobbit but we never actually learn how much gold the dragon had been hoarding.
That is until now.
According to an Instagram post by Forbes, it was finally revealed how much Smaug would be worth if he just so happened to be a member of modern-day society.
However, I don’t think any of us expected the fire-drake to not be too far behind Bill Gates when it comes to net-worth.

It is estimated that Smaug’s gold would total around $73.20 billion.
Yep, you read that correctly and The Lord of the Rings fans were shocked by the news over on r/lotr.
“Smaug has been a literary icon of excess and greed for over 85 years, and there are still 20 billionaires each hoarding more wealth than this actual dragon,” user RumpusRoomMinis rightfully said.
However, user Atrampoline believes Smaug’s net-worth would be even more.

“No way that number is right.
That would equate to only 912 tons of gold, which I would argue he has WAY more of. And that's not accounting for jewels, and other high value objects.”
Of course, $73.20 billion is just an estimate as we have no real way of knowing but either way, it is a shocking revelation nonetheless.
