Director James Cameron has shut down ‘offensive’ rumours that he’s making an OceanGate film following the recent tragedy surrounding the Titanic-bound submersible.
Last month, an OceanGate submersible became the subject of headlines around the world after it went missing following a 12,500ft dive to the wreckage of the Titanic. Rescue efforts were quickly launched to try and locate the five passengers: OceanGate co-founder Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, and French marine expert Paul Henri-Nageulet. It was hoped that the men could be located before oxygen on the vessel ran out.
Unfortunately, rescue teams soon discovered that the submersible had ‘imploded’ and suffered a ‘catastrophic failure’ killing all of those on-board. The experience had reportedly cost each of the passengers a whopping $250,000. Reports claim that questions had been raised surrounding the safety and durability of the vessels which were seemingly operated using a Logitech gaming controller.

James Cameron, who famously directed 1997’s Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, has since been the subject of several ‘jokes’ with many suggesting that he will capitalise on the tragedy and make a loose sequel to Titanic focused on the tragedy. As reported by Dexerto, Cameron has now responded to these “offensive” rumours.
He took to Twitter to say, “I don’t respond to offensive rumours in the media usually, but I need to now. I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be.” Instead, Cameron is assumed to be busy at work on the Avatar franchise. The upcoming third instalment was filmed alongside The Way of Water and is now believed to be in post-production. As you can imagine from this franchise though, it’s a lengthy post-production period due to the vast amount of VFX required. The film is tentatively set to release on 19 December 2025.
