Earlier this year, The Embracer Group made a hefty purchase after acquiring Square Enix’s North American studios - Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montreal - along with several major IPs including Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, for $300 million.
The Embracer Group has now released its report reflecting on the most recent financial year and has offered an interesting look into what we can expect from the company in the coming months, including what’s next for several franchises including the newly acquired Tomb Raider series.
Speaking of Square Enix, the studio's next major release is Forspoken which is set to be released on 11 October 2022. Take a look at the trailer below.
The report confirmed that The Embracer Group is looking to focus on remakes, spin-offs, and remasters after acquiring some of Square Enix’s major IPs.

They said: “After the end of the quarter, we further strengthened our development capabilities and IP-portfolio by entering into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal, including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy Of Kain and other IPs. The announcement got an overwhelming and positive response. We see a great potential not only in sequels, but also in remakes, remasters, spin-offs.”
The Embracer Group went on to confirm that they “expect the transaction to close in the July - September period,” so we could see these teased projects begin to enter development later this year.
Outside of The Embracer Group’s plans, we know that Crystal Dynamics were already developing a new Tomb Raider entry. Confirmed during Epic’s State of Unreal event earlier this year, the game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5. We don’t yet know whether the project is a continuation of the reboot trilogy, a brand-new story, or a remake. Either way, we should expect to see several Tomb Raider projects head our way over the next few years, and I’m all for spending some more time with Lara and her chaotic globetrotting adventures.
