Amazon has just announced the next official follow-up for The Lord of the Rings, and fan reactions are certainly… something…

As revealed on the official The Rings of Power Twitter account, the third season of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings prequel series is on its way.

“Jumping forward several years from the events of Season 2, Season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron,” states the press release, “as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”

So, the fan reactions to this one are a real mixed bag. Like for instance, some people are pretty thrilled.

“Love the Series. Season 2 was Special. Can’t wait,” commented user @CNMunoz.

“Looking forward to it. Show gained a lot of momentum in S2, hoping that trend and trajectory continues in to S3,” replied user @goodson_erik.

Then you got folks like this fella.

“Not even trying to follow source material at this point. Ship of Theseus, you’re not Lord of the Rings anymore,” commented user @rougarou1776.

That last one was the most chill angry comment I could find. The other angry people in the thread are just waffling about “woke” and “liberal Hollywood” (as is to be expected with Twitter).

No word on exactly when the third season of The Rings of Power is set to release, but Amazon has revealed that filming is set to begin in the second quarter of 2025. Given the filming schedule between the second season and it’s release, it’s probably fair to assume that the third season will come out in the second half of 2026.

Gotta wonder, if people are this mad about the third season of The Rings of Power… how mad are they gonna be about The Hunt of Gollum when that releases?
