Since it began airing in January and concluded with a spectacular final episode in March, The Last Of Us has become a smash-hit for the HBO Max streaming service. Averaging a total 32 million viewers per episode in the US, the series has also become the most-watched in Europe, as well as Latin America, adding to its immense success.
It also did wonders for HBO Max’s subscription figures, which rose by 1.6 million since December 2022, bringing the grand total up to 97.6 million since March of this year.

Adapting the award-winning story of the Naughty Dog game The Last Of Us, the TV show follows Joel and Ellie, played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey respectively, as they attempt to navigate and survive the harsh and dangerous fungal-themed apocalypse. They meet a large cast of characters, get into a few scrapes and bond as they embark on a mission to find a cure to the parasitic infection, of which Ellie might be the key.
Critics and fans heavily praised the show for faithfully adapting the beloved story and characters from the game, as well as expanding upon story beats that weren’t explored further in the source material. It’s also led to more faith in additional video game adaptations, as two other PlayStation-exclusive series, God Of War and Horizon, are also set to receive the small-screen treatment.
Fans eager for more are patiently waiting for season 2, which is currently in early stages of development, and promises more infected, more wholesome moments, and more intense fight scenes. It’s also led to speculation as to how future seasons will adapt some of the major story moments yet to come for the characters, such as Ellie’s transition into the main protagonist and the events that lead up to it.
