The Super Mario Bros. Movie has surpassed expectations and made animated-film history by passing $1 billion at the box office.
After some mixed review scores from critics and an astounding amount of love and admiration from fans, Mario’s second big-screen outing has smashed past $1 billion since leaping into cinemas on 5 April. Only a select few animated films have ever achieved such a feat, often being Disney films such as The Lion King ($1.66 billion) Frozen 2 ($1.45 billion) and Frozen ($1.28 billion), making Nintendo and Illumination’s efforts even more impressive.
We spoke to actress Anya Taylor-Joy about her role in the film.
But that’s not all, as the film also made history for having the highest opening weekend ever for an animated film. It was also the first film of 2023 to earn over $1 billion. Fans hoping to see more Nintendo projects in the future are also in luck, as it seems Nintendo is open to additional films featuring other popular gaming icons. Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto stated in a recent interview, “Nintendo is like a talent agency. We have plenty of other entertainers. There are many possible ways we could go, such as using characters that would be fit for movies, or very well-known characters.”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s post-credit scene also seemingly confirms another film is on the way, and fans are already providing more fan casts for potential characters, like Pedro Pascal as Wario. Many are also calling for spin-off films of the Super Mario cast, like a Luigi’s Mansion movie, or a story about Bowser. The possibilities are endless, and hopefully, the huge financial success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be the beginning of the highly-desired ‘Nintendo-verse’.
We thought the film was absolutely joyous, with everything a Nintendo fan could hope to see in a big-screen adaptation of one of its most beloved franchises, and you should definitely check out our review if you haven’t already.
