Valve has finally given us a solid release date for its very own portable console; the Steam Deck and it is getting very close. Initially planned for a 2021 holiday release, Valve had to delay the Steam Deck's launch by two months due to the global computer chip shortage.
Valve was eager to remind potential customers that development of its portable power house was going smoothly and that it was only a hardware shortage which was thwarting progress. It seems to be true to its word as, right on time, it has announced the Steam Deck's official launch as 25 February.
Not sure whether you want to buy a Steam Deck or not? Watch the video below to find out more about it.
The process of claiming yours is a little complex though so it's important to pay attention to any upcoming emails and instructions. Firstly, in order to have the chance to catch the first wave of releases you must make sure to secure your pre-order before the launch date. Also, the email you use to pre-order is the one your purchase email is sent to so make sure you have access to it.
The final note on pre-orders is that you will only be able to purchase the model you pre-ordered. There are three models of Steam Deck, each with different memory capacities and accessories. The cheapest model also comes without a solid state hard drive so load times will be slower. Pre-order the one which suits you, but know you cannot change your mind after the fact.
From 25 February, Valve will then begin emailing customers from the pre-order list. If you are one of the lucky emailees, you will have 72 hours to confirm your order and pay the rest of the amount. The final amount deducts the pre-order cost (usually £4) and there is no extra fees for shipping. If you do not confirm and pay within this frame you lose your chance that round and another person will be offered your model.
The first models will then begin shipping from 28 February and should arrive shortly afterwards. If you are not included in the first wave of emails then don't lose heart. Valve is planning to send out a wave of emails on a weekly basis until the pre-orders are complete.
That's all you need to know about ordering your Steam Deck, so good luck brave shoppers.
