One of the most intriguing pieces of lore in the series surrounds an Elvern species known as Dwemer who last appeared in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind but by the time we got to Skyrim, they’re whereabouts were pretty much nonexistent.

This no-show in the lands of Tamriel has resulted in fans speculating about what happened to the Elven species since the release of Skyrim in 2011. However, it seems that there were answers all along.
“What actually happened to the Dwemer? Where did they go? Theories?” asked Redditor t-godddd and MrM1005 provided the answers we’d been looking for.

MrM1005 explained all via information sourced from The Elder Scrolls wiki pages. They said during a side-quest in the College of Winterhold, a mage is encountered who has his soul absorbed by the Dragonborn with a Soul Gem. Once a soul is absorbed, it’s possible to summon mages for combat.
To cut a long story short, this is what happened to the Dwemer but rather than their souls being taken by a Dragonborn, they were instead taken by another Dwemer who harnessed the added power from a Heart of Lorkhan in Morrowind. After that moment, the Elven species disappeared and was never seen again.
