The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is packed full of deep lore, legends, myths and mysteries yet to be discovered. However, it seems that some Skyrim fans have solved a mystery that has plagued us for over 13 years.

When The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released in 2011, it instantly became an all-time classic, which is why after all these years, it arguably remains as popular as ever. Due to its continued popularity, it has also been ported to just about every platform imaginable with the most recent being PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021.

Check out the Skyrim Anniversary Edition trailer below!

One of the reasons why Skyrim has remained so popular is largely thanks to its ever-vibrant modding community which continues to breathe new life into the popular Bethesda fantasy RPG. That being said, the biggest reason is of course, due to it being a fantastic game that still has fans sharing their adventures with fellow explorers on Reddit.

One of the mysteries that has kept friends gossiping after all these years is the illusive ‘letter from a friend’. Some have speculated that it could be the Ebony Warrior or Talos, a dragonborn and heir to the Seat of Sundered Kings.

“Could the letters from a "friend" possibly be from the Ebony Warrior?” asked a Redditor kicking off the discussion on the thread. “He just sends you to all these places to get you strong enough, so you're a worthy challenger for him to battle.”

Yet, the thread was quick to correct the Redditor with the theory of the Ebony Warrior already being debunked and it is believed that this mysterious friend sending you letters is one of the Greybeards who has been guiding you to secret dungeons and other points of interest in the lands of Tamriel.

“I had read somewhere, probably here, that folks thought it was one of the other Greybeards who don't talk out of fear of the power of shouts, hence the notes about you using your shout,” replied MisterNoMoniker.

“Would he (the mysterious friend) be doing it in secret from the other Greybeards? Because if they knew one of them was writing to you, why do they not mention it when we meet them?” quizzed the Redditor that kicked off the discussion, to which MisterNoMoniker simply replied, “Because they don't talk.”

Questioning the theory on the Greybeards further, Allustar1 asked “How do they know when and where you are using those shouts?” Weasel_The_Loner responded, “They happened to know right after you used your first shout after killing the dragon by the watchtower.”

So, there you have it, if you’ve been wondering who’s been sending you those helpful letters in Skyrim, the evidence suggests that it may have been the Greybeards all along. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is out now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
