An upcoming underwater horror survival game that looks like an uncomfortable mix between Resident Evil 7 and Subnautica just got a brand new trailer, and if I didn’t have a fear of the ocean before I watched it I sure as hell do now.
Dark Mass is an exploration-focused horror game from developers and publisher Path Games, set to release on Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 5 and Steam.
You play as Alice, a deep-sea explorer who unwittingly discovers an entire manor buried in the depths of the ocean.

Seems it doesn't take long for Alice to encounter a pretty good reason to leave though, as she realises pretty quickly that she’s sharing this tight, underwater death trap with something else.
The aforementioned something else is an “implacable presence” that “lurks in the shadows” of the house, apparently “bound to the manor” by some kind of otherworldly curse.
The funny thing is, the monster itself is the least scary part of the game to me. Seeing Alice trapped in a house underwater just unlocked a new, very specific fear I didn’t know I had, because something about a very familiar, cramped underwater space is giving me an uncomfortable feeling.
Don’t take my word for it though, as you can take a gander at the brand new trailer for Dark Mass instead and inflict the same kind of fresh new phobia upon yourself. Don’t say I didn’t warn you though.

No exact release date on this one and very little to go off of in terms of extra info from the developers, but you can currently wishlist Dark Mass on all the platforms it has been announced for.
There’s no rush getting this one out though, Path Games. I was actually thinking of booking an ocean-side holiday sometime soon so, feel free to release it after I’ve been and gone.
