Red Dead Redemption 2 is about as near-perfect a video game as we can expect, almost impossible to improve upon, right? Well, if you thought that, you might be wrong.
Released in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, then the following year on PC, Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2, a prequel to the 2010 game was met with high critical acclaim from the get-go. On the aggregate website Metacritic, Red Dead Redemption 2 scored a whopping 97, earning the “Must-Play” accolade.

So, how do we improve on near-perfection and go as far as to make it feel like a brand new game, I hear you ask? Well, Reddit user chatterwrack believes they have the answer.

“If you’ve played the crap out of this game and start to feel a little routine, turn the map off. You will need it for some missions and you will also need to refer to the big map to give yourself a general idea of where you want to ultimately go,” they began to explain.
However, despite feeling a little lost for the most part in the huge open-world of Red Dead Redemption 2, chatterwrack continues: “You will get a real feel for the map, the landmarks, the sun’s position. The railroad tracks, rivers and directional signs become navigation tools.”
“The stranger interactions come as a surprise and the gunfights are a fun challenge when you don’t know where the enemies are coming from. The game feels suddenly fresh to me.”
To be honest, this seems like a cracking idea and if I were to fire up Red Dead Redemption 2 and lose hundreds of hours to this great game (again), losing the mini-map could be a fresh way to approach a new campaign.

“That’s what I’m doing, it’s nice to see someone thinking the same. I’ve got used to it and now every time I need to get the map on, it feels strange,” OutlawJorge replied.

“Unfortunately, some missions are almost impossible to do without the minimap unless you know exactly what to do, and where to go. On free-roam, I never have the mini-map on except sometimes the compass. It makes the game more immersive and interesting.”
No doubt, this could be the most immersive way to play Red Dead Redemption 2, but fellow Reddit user crispybutternuggets was quick to recommend using the compass from time to time as a guide.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is backwards compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S but sadly has no improved performance on the new-gen consoles.
