If you turned on your PlayStation 5 yesterday, you’ll have been greeted with a brand new system update. I’ll admit, system updates aren’t always the most exciting of things and oftentimes, you’ll barely notice the behind the scenes changes. In this case though, the latest update actually introduced some very cool new features.
The biggest feature is of course the integration of Discord into the PlayStation 5. It was first announced that Discord would be coming to the PS5 two years ago and after what feels like the longest wait, it’s finally here. All you need to do is connect your PSN account to your Discord account. Then, simply join a voice channel and from a separate device (like your phone or computer), select ‘Transfer to Console’ and select the PS5. Handy, right? That’s not all the update does though.
We’re just over one month away from the release of PS5-exclusive Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores. Who’s excited? I am. Take a look at the trailer below.
As reported by IGN, the latest firmware update allows US and UK PlayStation 5 owners to use voice commands to capture gameplay. Essentially, you just need to say “Hey PlayStation, start recording” and, you’ve guessed it, the PS5 will start capturing gameplay footage. As someone who works in games and thus is used to navigating my way over to the record button, this is quite honestly life changing.

The update also makes it easier for PS5 owners to locate their VR games as a new VR filter has been added to users’ game library. There’s also new VRR support for 1440p resolution, plus PS5 owners will now find it much easier to locate saved PS4 data. If you install a PS4 game on the console which includes a saved data file, a notification will appear in the PSN cloud storage.
That’s not all. You can now transfer PS5 data to another PS5 console via local Wi-Fi or a LAN cable, plus if you own a physical disc version of a game, you can now use the disc installation to download a digital copy of that game so you won’t have to insert the disc in future. All in all, a successful update.
