PlayStation Plus' August free games have a lot riding on them, I think it's fair to say.
It's been a rocky year for PlayStation Plus so far. While there have been some genuinely tremendous new additions to the service, including iconic trilogies and stunning PS5 exclusives, there have also been some missteps. The good news? It seems things are looking up already, which is a very promising sign for August's free games.
In case you missed the news at the end of last month, the free PlayStation Plus Essential games for July are Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Alan Wake Remastered and Endling - Extinction is Forever. Not a bad mix at all. We're also getting a ton of brilliant new games for the Extra tier, including one of my favourite releases of the last decade.

So what will August bring? Will the PlayStation Plus fairies up their game again, or are we facing another disappointing month? It's too soon to say for sure what the next batch of free games for subscribers will be, but let's go back to Augusts gone by to see if we can get a good idea of what's to come.
The good news is that previous Augusts have actually given us some genuine bangers. 2020 gave us Fall Guys, a brilliant battle royale which deservedly took the world by storm - if only for a moment - during lockdown. We also got the remastered campaign of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, typically regarded as one of the best single-player FPS campaigns out there.
2022 was far from shabby, with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 Remastered, Little Nightmares, and Yakuza: Like A Dragon all in the mix.
While it's worth noting PlayStation Plus doesn't exactly follow a logical pattern, things are looking bright for August 2023. And if we had to guess based on the pattern of indie, AAA, and curveball? I'd put my money down on Oxenfree, Immortals: Fenyx Rising, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Check back in a month to see just how hideously wrong I was.
