Square Enix has really hit the headlines this week. In case you missed it, the publisher recently sold its North American studios - Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montreal - to The Embracer Group for $300 million along with several major IPs including Tomb Raider and Deus Ex.
The seemingly quite modest deal will let Square Enix continue with their plans to invest in blockchain technologies, which sounds horrendous. One title that remains under Square Enix’s banner though is this year’s Babylon’s Fall. I hope they weren’t counting on this to fund their blockchain endeavours as the game recently hit a dire low.
I can't imagine many people are going to be left wanting to play Babylon's Fall so just watch this three-minute trailer instead and you'll know all you need to know.
Babylon’s Fall was released in March for PC and also as a PlayStation console exclusive. At release, it was the worst-rated PlayStation 5 game and this week, the concurrent player count of Babylon’s Fall well … fell … to just one player on PC.

According to the Steam Charts, the player count fell to just one at midnight on 4 May. In the last 30 days, the average player count sat at 62 which is horrifically low for a RPG launched by a major publisher like Square Enix.
Babylon’s Fall released to abysmal reviews so whilst the player count is terrible, it’s also not a complete surprise. VGC’s Jordan Middler gave the game just one star saying, “There is no one that we would recommend Babylon’s Fall to. It’s visually dated, consistently dull and features the most average PlatinumGames combat we can remember,” whilst Dexerto’s Lloyd Coombes said, “Even playing with friends isn’t enough to bring this game back from the brink, and as a full-priced title, it’s absolutely impossible to recommend.”
The developers at PlatinumGames don’t appear to be scaling back on the game’s support despite the extremely low player count. They previously tweeted confirming that “content up to the end of season two is now practically complete and we have started work on season three and beyond.” I’m not sure anyone will be around to play it though.
