Microsoft has just revealed that, following an upcoming update, players will quite literally be able to download more storage space for their Xbox Series X/S consoles. We are truly living in the future.
Thank you in advance to Gamespot's Darryn Bonthuys for the original source!
The Xbox Update Preview patch notes for update 2502.250120-2200 are here, and they’ve revealed that, by utilising some kind of mystic of dark arts, Xbox owners will be able to increase their available storage space in the next Xbox patch.

This is a little odd to explain, so I’m going to let the press release take it from here.
“We are enabling support for external USB drives larger than 16TB, so you can be sure your favourite games are always ready to play!” reads the patch notes.
“Newly formatted drives that are larger than 16TB will be formatted with multiple partitions to utilise all available space for games and apps. These will appear as multiple devices in the storage devices list.”
DOOM: The Dark Ages will feature in tonight's Xbox Developer Direct.
So, obviously you’re going to actually need a drive that’s bigger than 16TB to take advantage of this, but you could feasibly add a whopping 80+ terabytes of space to your external drive this way.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve already formatted the drive before, as the patch notes state that you’ll need to reformat it regardless.
You’ll have to reformat any drive bigger than 16TB that you’re currently using with your Xbox however, so I hope you’re ready to re-download all of your games if you want to take advantage of this. I pray you have a great internet service provider.
No word on exactly when this update will go live for the general public, as it’s only currently available to participants in the Alpha Skip-Ahead Ring program, but once it does we’ll make sure to let you know ASAP.
