Xbox next-gen console release date seemingly confirmed in Call Of Duty leak

CoD Confirmed (kind of)

If rumours are to be believed, the next-gen Call of Duty game is currently being developed on the next Xbox.

We all know that a new Call of Duty game is on the way, such as the one yet to be announced this year and the inevitable 2026 release. That being said, what might surprise some, is that it looks like last-gen consoles will finally be ditched.

Check out the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 trailer below!

Other than in 2004, publisher Activision has treated to a new Call of Duty game every year since its inception in 2003 and it more often than not, becomes the best-selling title of that year.

Typically, it's a cross-platform title when a new Call of Duty arrives, such as last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. However, according to a rumour making the social media rounds, that might not be the case for the 2026 release.

According to XCancel user, TheGhostOfHope, the currently unannounced and unnamed Call of Duty 2026 game will only be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It’s also claimed that the game is being developed on dev kits for the next-gen Xbox.

It’s also rumoured that it will have an overhauled user interface and will be “more traditional”, so I’d guess more streamlined like it used to be in the original Modern Warfare games (maybe).

What’s more, the XCancel user says that Warzone 3 is not a guarantee if the current Verdansk map “fails to retain current/returning players.”

Users on Reddit have been discussing these rumours and the general opinion is, that most are happy that last-gen consoles are being ditched.

“So it takes until the next-gen to stop making last-gen games?” said ctyldsley.

“Not surprising, Infinity Ward is usually the studio that establishes the new tech, so if that studio is making the first CoD game for the new consoles, it makes sense,” replied fastcooljosh.

“It’s going to be odd not having a single current-gen-only CoD only,” exclaimed Death_Metalhead101.

It’s not always ideal for last-gen gamers to be left behind but at some point, it’s got to happen. Games being developed for current-gen systems only, usually work out for the better because they’re not being held back by developers having to make them compatible for inferior systems.

Of course, these rumours are unconfirmed at this time, so we should take them with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise.

This year's Call of Duty hasnt been announced yet but its big reveal is likely to happen in the coming months. We’ll keep you posted when that happens.
