Xbox's new free RPG is blowing up right now

Free RPG is an instant hit

It’s great when a game comes along that is not only free-to-play, but it's also a fun game that can keep you entertained for countless hours, such as the newly released, The First Descendant.

Developed and published by Korean studio NEXON, The First Descendant is a free-to-play action-adventure shooter that was released at the end of June for PC, PlayStation and Xbox, which does have somewhat of a resemblance to Bungie’s Destiny.

Check out The First Descendant trailer below!

“The First Descendant is a third-person looter shooter powered by Unreal Engine 5. Become a Descendant. Fight for the survival of humanity. Descendants have unique abilities to tackle both solo and co-op missions. Up to 4 players use varied mechanics to defeat giant bosses,” reads the description of the game.

So how much of a success is The First Descendant, I hear you ask? While we can’t obtain exact numbers on PlayStation and Xbox, it is currently in the top ten games on PSN and number one in the free-to-play charts on Xbox right now.

However, we can get more definitive numbers on the PC platform Steam. According to SteamDB, at the time of writing, The First Descendant has a concurrent player peak of 264,860, a 24-hour peak of 123,321 and over 86,000 players right now.

So it’s fair to say that The First Descendant has gotten off to a good start so far. That being said, it will be interesting to see the numbers six months or a year from now, because maintaining player engagement for the long haul is always the toughest task.

It’s perhaps worth considering that The First Descendant does have a “mixed” review score on Steam, so hopefully, the developers can fix issues that gamers have in the coming months. We’ll keep you posted if we have any further developers on the latest free-to-play hit.
