Obsidian Entertainment is teasing its upcoming fantasy RPG Avowed as an Outer Worlds-style take on the genre.
From its initial reveal, and the in-depth gameplay from the recent Xbox showcase event, fans have wholeheartedly believed that Avowed is Obsidian’s take on an Elder Scrolls game in a similar way to Fallout: New Vegas was its take on a Fallout game.
See the Avowed gameplay for yourself below.
While you can definitely draw some similarities between it and Bethesda’s RPGs, the developers have made it very clear that Avowed aims to be its own game, though that probably won’t stop players saying it’s a Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim clone.

Game director Carrie Patel discussed the game in a recent interview and addressed the comparisons to Skyrim but said, "The model we've looked to internally is building Avowed as our fantasy take on The Outer Worlds, not with the same tone, but a similar structure to the world and in terms of scope."
The Outer Worlds was also hit with several comparisons to Fallout, despite taking place in space and not relying on an open world. Quests and action were similar but there was enough in The Outer Worlds to separate itself from the Fallout games.
In Avowed, players will embark on a new world-saving journey where they’ll master a variety of different combat styles. This includes swords, axes, daggers and crossbows as well as a stellar-looking magic system. Instead of casting from your hands like in The Elder Scrolls games players will equip wands to launch magic at enemies like you’re a wizard in Harry Potter. You can even dual-wield the wand for greater power.
Avowed will launch exclusively for the Xbox Series X/S and PC later this year, and will be available as part of your Xbox Game Pass subscription from day one.
