This game within a game holds plenty of spooks

Looking for something spooky to play this Halloween? Then I may have just the thing.

Among Ashes is an exciting new indie horror that’s set to launch later this year, but to coincide with Steam Next Fest, a demo has landed for players to sample - and I highly encourage you to do just that.

Developed by Rat Cliff Games, Among Ashes is a first-person survival horror that boasts a very interesting premise.

“Your friend has sent you a link to a game that someone posted online,” the synopsis begins.

“But as you play, you quickly realise that something is terribly wrong. Whatever you do … keep playing.”

I bet that’s nabbed your attention.

Take a look at Among Ashes below - if you’re brave enough.

Set in the early 2000s, Among Ashes sees you load up a game your fictional friend has found online titled Night Call.

You’ll soon realise though that Night Call’s spooks extend far beyond your boxy PC.

There are some spring-tingling secrets to discover about the game’s creation.

Within Night Call, the game within a game, you’ll explore an old manor, solving puzzles and fighting terrifying monsters.

But so too in the ‘real life’ portion of the game will you be haunted by “dark entities” that stalk players.

You’re going to want to seek out as much information as you can on the game’s creator.

“Among ashes the truth remains. Uncover it, or you may not survive the night,” tease devs.

The demo lasts for between 30 and 45 minutes depending on how quickly you speed through, and it works on Steam Deck if that’s your preferred method of play.

As I said, the free demo is available to experience now over on Steam, and is well worth giving a whirl if you want something that’s perfectly suited to the Halloween season.
