Steam gamers urged to check out gorgeous free download: 'I really like it'

Could this be the Minecraft 2.0 we've always wanted?

A brand new “ray tracing voxel art” game has earned some serious praise from players on Steam, and it’s pretty easy to see why considering the Minecraft influences at play.

Voxile is an upcoming voxel game from developers VoxRay Games, Inc. that looks like a next-gen version of Minecraft (and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible).

Funnily enough, the game isn’t really drawing much attention for the gameplay, but rather (based on the comments in the thread) its visuals.

“I played this yesterday (I look at the voxel category on Steam almost every day) and I really like it. I didn't get far but the part of the world I was in is absolutely gorgeous, and I think they are right in marketing their work here (the ray tracing) because it looks day and night compared to the other 99% of voxel demos I try every week or so,” commented user _N_o_r_B_.

“A huge part of Minecraft's success is the curiosity factor in the exploration and it's no different here; I accidentally shot through the floor in a random house which led to a cave that had a chest.”

“Nice to finally give it a shot! I tried it on my little Fedora laptop with integrated graphics and it works like a charm with your 2x upscaler,” replied user Tactical_Dan.

“Love the rendering style, it took me a while to really understand what the global illumination is doing, I guess it's like a voxel cascade type, with a really short range. The shadows look incredible, with how each individual cube is shadowed perfectly.”

I think the most interesting part of this whole thread is the comments from the developers themselves, because they seem to indicate that players are being drawn to the game entirely based on it’s art style and the ads for it that tout its ray tracing features.

While you can see from the trailer for Voxile that there’s clearly a lot of content planned for the game, some of which you can even explore in the demo, players are mostly just flocking to it based on visuals alone.

Either way, I suggest you decide for yourself by giving the demo on Steam a go. No release date for this one yet but, given how much the developers have planned, I wouldn’t be surprised it’s at least a year or two off yet.
