If you’re someone who enjoys sinking hours into cosy games like Stardew Valley, Fae Farm, or Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you are most definitely going to want to keep an eye on the upcoming Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge.
This may just be the most delightful looking game I’ve seen thus far this year. Developed by Humble Reeds and set to be published by Armor Games Studios, Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge isn’t your typical farming sim. Yes, you have a picturesque homestead to decorate and take care of, but instead of growing a bountiful harvest of crops, you’re going to want to focus on creating a wetland wildlife sanctuary for your ever-growing cohort of froggy friends. Oh and it just so happens that Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge boasts a stunning hand-drawn 2D art style.
Take a look at Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge in action below.
The game’s synopsis reads, “Kamaeru is a cosy farming sim about collecting and raising frogs, farming, and preserving nature. You play as a kind soul helping an old friend restore the wetlands of your childhood by transforming them into a safe haven for friendly little frogs. With the help of the game’s cast of welcoming NPCs, you will photograph and breed frogs to increase your reputation, decorate your refuge, and plant native crops to help your amphibian abode thrive!”

There are over 50 froggy friends to find and collect, and it’s down to you to build a habitat that attracts and satisfies each and every species. Certain unique frog patterns are unlocked via mini-games, and you’ll be able to track all of your captures via the frogedex. I’m already low-key obsessed with the idea of this game.
While a release date isn’t available quite yet, a demo is landing soon for a very limited time on Steam. Steam Next Fest runs from 5 February to 12 February and it’s during this time that you can give Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge a whirl via a limited time free trial. I think I’ll do just that.
