Regardless of whether you’ve just joined PlayStation Plus or whether you’ve been a subscriber for quite some time, it can often be difficult to know where to start when you’re picking out a new game.
I should add that this is a problem for extra and premium tier subscribers. If you opt for the cheapest essential tier, you’ll gain around three offerings a month. January’s line-up will only be available for a few more days so grab A Plague Tale: Requiem, Evil West, and Nobody Saves The World if any of those titles appeal to you. As I was saying though, PlayStation Plus’ extra and premium tier catalogues offer access to a wide array of titles, featuring plenty of sprawling RPGs that you can sink hours upon hours into - and to help you out, we’ve rounded up the very best of the bunch.
Foamstars will join the essential tier as a day one release on 6 February. Take a look at the game in action below.
I heartily recommend you sample Sea of Stars, Undertale, Tomb Raider, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Mortal Shell, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy VII, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, and Thymesia. That should be enough to get you started in the wonderful world of RPGs.

Sea of Stars was one of our favourite releases of 2023. In our review, GAMINGbible’s Ewan wrote, “Sabotage Studios has created an unforgettable, essential RPG that stands on the shoulders of giants and boldly looks ahead to the future. Sea Of Stars is damn-near perfect, and more than deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the titles that inspired it.”
It personally took me until last year to get around to playing Ghost of Tsushima. I know, I know … but better late than never. It’s true what they say. It features a divine open world and I’m now excitedly awaiting to see what Sucker Punch has been working on since its release. I also don’t think you’ve had the definitive PlayStation experience until you’ve played Horizon Zero Dawn, Aloy now being an icon of the brand.
There’s a fair mixture here to satisfy those of you who like your games on the more punishing side of things (ahem, Bloodborne) and for those who enjoy an engaging narrative set in an interesting open-world (Tomb Raider). Happy playing!
