PlayStation Plus subscribers are slating its latest game, saying that it looks great, but it’s way too “boring” to be worth playing.

October’s free monthly games were recently added to PlayStation Plus, giving users the opportunity to download Farming Simulator 22, Weird West, and the topic of today’s discussion, The Callisto Protocol.

Take a look at The Callisto Protocol below

Released in late 2022, The Callisto Protocol is a sci-fi survival horror developed by Striking Distance Studios. The plot follows Captain Jacob Lee as he attempts to escape a high-security prison filled with monsters. Its graphical details were highly praised on release, and still are, but fan and critic consensus says it’s one of the most boring survival-horror games ever released.

This was the opinion of Zairy47, who shared their experience with the game on the PlayStation Plus subreddit, mainly how it’s one of the least intimidating horror games they’ve ever played.

They said: “The Callisto Protocol is the most beautiful game I've ever played, but by God...it is SO BORING

“The combat is just dull and none of the Jumpscare actually worked for a horror game. The one time I actually was jumpscared was when I accidentally levitate a box and it glitches past my character and went straight to my camera for a split second…”

In case you weren’t aware, The Callisto Protocol was heavily inspired by the Dead Space series, and by heavily inspired, I mean it was developed by Dead Space’s creator and is considered to be a spiritual successor.

Unfortunately fans didn’t see it this way, with many fans agreeing that while it’s graphically impressive, there’s just nothing interesting happening to encourage a full playthrough.

“I enjoyed it for what it was but ultimately it’s short and quite repetitive by the end. Graphics and sound are fantastic but the gameplay gets a bit meh especially the bosses who are lacklustre.”

“I played it at launch and yeah, it's pretty much it, a very good-looking container filled with nothing.”

“Yeah the combat is really weird. I liked it but it isn’t a really memorable game. I just remember the actress from The Boys”

The Callisto Protocol is currently available as a free download for PlayStation Plus subscribers across all tiers.
