Every time we feel ourselves warming back up to PlayStation Plus, the service throws a curveball that sends us reeling.

The latest crushing blow to PlayStation Plus is how its set to remove one of the greatest Final Fantasy games from its services, which feels like a crime.

Before anyone comes for us over which title is the best of the franchise, this ruling has been decided by Metacritic scores and not our own.

If you want to play a newer FF title, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a solid choice.

Now that potential chaos has been dealt with before it gets out of control, let’s return to the grave news; with Final Fantasy IX due to leave PS Plus, it’s time to start playing if you haven’t already.

You have roughly four weeks to complete Final Fantasy IX, which feels like more than enough time even for the die-hard completionists among you.

And should you not manage that feat, there's a silver lining, “I know this has probably been mentioned before but most of these titles can be bought for less than $10 each when they are on deals on PSN,” explained a Reddit keen to spread good cheer and will.

Not to bring further bad news, but the aforementioned Final Fantasy title isn’t the only game leaving PS Plus in May – there’s a ton of games leaving the service before we’re ready.

But before you bury your head in the sand to avoid the inevitable, there’s the possibility that a Final Fantasy IX remake is headed our way. This could just be Square Enix stringing us along, but we’ll go with it for now because we'd love to see this remake happen.

No matter which way you look at this, the end of playing Final Fantasy IX for free is coming and it’s coming fast. If you want to avoid purchasing it, act now and power through its challenges to walk away a smug victor.
