PlayStation Plus has something for every gamer no matter the genre whether you like exploration, fighting hordes of enemies, crafting until your heart's content or perhaps being scared witless. The latter of which is today’s topic of discussion.

For many, the pinnacle of the survival horror genre begins and ends with the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but what if you could get a little of both of its creepy worlds? Enter Bethesda’s The Evil Within series.

Check out The Evil Within 2 trailer below!

Developed by Tango Gameworks and from the mind of Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil series, 2014’s The Evil Within proudly wears its inspiration on its sleeve. Sure the slow pace of The Evil Within might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but as a devoted fan of the survival horror genre, it’s a game that I’ve played to death (thankfully, not literally). Its creative monsters, wacky story, eerie world and resource management are everything that a fan of the genre would want. That being said, the few seconds that protagonist detective Sebastian Castellanos will sprint before being gassed out will always annoy me.

In 2017 we were greeted with The Evil Within 2 which looked to improve on its predecessor in every way including detective Seb being able to sprint for a little bit longer. Whether developer Tango Gameworks achieved success over the original game will depend on who you ask. The sequel also brought a sandbox open map that encouraged the player to explore for crafting resources, and secrets and partake in side stories. However, much like the first game in the series, The Evil Within 2 received somewhat of a mixed reception from fans of the genre.

“Do you recommend The Evil Within 2?” asked Redditor CA-22. “I recently played all the REmakes in a row and now I want to play more horror games. I want to play Alan Wake 2 but I'm waiting for a good sale. I didn't like the first The Evil Within at all but I'm willing to give TEW2 a try. I wanted to know if any of you have played it and what you think about it.”

“Um. With all my heart, HELL YES. One of my all-time favourite games ever” replied CosmicWanderer2814. “The Evil Within did some great things, but it just did too many other things I didn’t like. The Evil Within 2 does nearly everything significantly better. Played it back to back with the RE2 remake, and honestly, I think I liked it just as much,” explained wagimus.

“The Evil Within is scarier but The Evil Within 2 is a better video game. TEW2 is hella underrated because nobody wanted to give it a shot after the first game was so janky. It holds up well too, I just replayed it last year. It[‘s worth playing,” exclaimed VenusNoleyPoley2.

The Evil Within and its 2017 sequel are out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. What’s more, both games are included in Xbox Game Pass as well as the Extra and Premium PS Plus subscription tiers. So if you subscribe to either and you love survival horror, go and check them out if you haven't already.
