PlayStation Plus free games for October 2023 face an uphill battle

PlayStation Plus free games for October 2023 face an uphill battle

A lot of pressure on

The PlayStation Plus free games for October 2023 are going to be facing a massive uphill battle for... pretty obvious reasons.

You have to hand it to PlayStation for nailing the worst timing ever. Mere days before the Starfield and arguably the biggest reason yet to buy Xbox Game Pass, Sony chose to poop in its own pants by dropping one of the worst months of free games for PlayStation Plus in years. And as if that wasn't bad enough? They then went and raised the price of the service across all three tiers. Yikes.

Take a look at our Starfield review below!

The new PlayStation Plus prices are as follows:

  • Essential 12-Month Subscription- $79.99, 71,99 Euro, 59.99 GBP.
  • Extra 12-Month Subscription- 134.99 USD, 125,99 Euro, 99.99 GBP
  • Premium 12-Month Subscription- 159.99 USD, 151,99 Euro, 119.99 GBP.

With PlayStation Plus members cancelling in droves in protest of the price hike, Sony really needs to bring out the big guns in October to win some fans back.

It's no secret that September's free games just didn't cut it, and did absolutely nothing to justify the sudden increase in price. Saints Row (2022), Black Desert–Traveler Edition, and Generation Zero are hardly what anyone would call bangers. And so it is that October's free games must do better. Much, much better.

At the time of writing it's far too early to know what Sony has up its silky sleeves for October's PlayStation Plus Essential offerings, but when you consider Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is dropping 20 October, there's a very strong chance we could see the first game added to the service. That'd certainly win over some fans, though others would no doubt point out since the game is currently available on PlayStation Plus Extra there's little point.

Whatever PlayStation Plus does next month, it needs to be big. Xbox Game Pass has been going from strength to strength this year, and the general consensus is that Sony needs to step up its game - and indeed, its games - fast.
