Killzone has lain dormant for over a decade, so it’s hardly a thriving IP.
And with that in mind, it hasn’t come as a total shock that Guerrilla Games has now provided confirmation that they’re done with the franchise.
Just because the news isn’t shocking though, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt.

You see, Killzone may not be thriving but it could be - and that’s what makes this news so sad.
There are plenty of stellar cross-platform shooters out there, and Xbox, of course, has Halo as its flagship FPS franchise.
PlayStation though, it doesn’t really have a defining IP in that race.
Both Resistance and Killzone have been touted as potential series that could be revived to become that, but if Killzone is ever to return, it certainly won’t be with Guerrilla Games at the helm.

After all, it’s full steam ahead on the Horizon franchise.
LEGO Horizon Adventures launches next month. Take a look at the game in action below.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Guerrilla art director Roy Postma confirmed that the studio was “done with [Killzone] as a team” adding that in fact, the creation of Horizon Zero Dawn was an opportunity for the studio to head in the total opposite direction.

“As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette. It was, by choice, the opposite of Killzone. I think the themes that this story and the characters represent are relatable for all ages and people, like having a found family of friends and finding your place in the world,” he said.
As I said, it’s not a total surprise.
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is on the way next week, followed by LEGO Horizon Adventures next month.
Beyond that, it’s believed that a third and final Horizon instalment is in the works alongside a multiplayer project.

Developers are busy - too busy to consider returning to Killzone, especially as Horizon has catapulted the studio to a stratospheric level of success.
Still, we could see Killzone shipped to another studio.
Ballistic Moon has just handled the Until Dawn remake, for example, instead of Supermassive Games.
For now though, we’ll just have to think back fondly on those epic Killzone memories.
