PlayStation gamers will soon be able to grab a free game and no, a PlayStation Plus subscription is not required.
That being said, if you do have a PlayStation Plus subscription, you may actually already own the title in question.
Would anything spring to mind if I uttered the phrase ‘PlayStation Splatoon’?

Earlier this year, Square Enix dropped its take on the Splatoon formula with Foamstars.
The paid-for live-service title launched on PlayStation Plus as a day one title, allowing users to grab it for free for a limited time.
If you missed out through or didn’t happen to have a PlayStation Plus subscription, Foamstars would cost you £24.99.
That’s still the case to this day but in just a few weeks, you’ll be able to nab the game for free.

Yes, in a move that I’m sure will come as a surprise to no one, Foamstars has formally announced that it’s going free-to-play.
Take a look at Foamstars in action below.
The change is due to come into effect on 4 October at which stage both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users will be able to grab the game for free.

Additionally, you don't need a PlayStation Plus subscription to enjoy its online nature.
“While previously a subscription to PlayStation Plus was required to play Foamstars, after the price change, consumers who are not subscribed to PlayStation Plus may download and play Foamstars for free,” a statement read.
If you did already pay for the game, you’ll be able to get a Legacy Gift that includes 12 colour-variant Bubble Beastie skins, one Slide Board design, and the ‘Legacy’ title.
I think this is a great move for the game. You need only look at how Fall Guys’ player count skyrocketed for a while following its move to free-to-play several years ago.

I’ve tried Foamstars myself and I have to say, I had more fun than I was expecting.
Smash the Star was easily the most entertaining mode in my opinion. The only thing that really stopped me and my friends from returning was the fact that it took so long to matchmake between the pretty short matches.
Waiting started to feel like a chore but hey, following the free-to-play move, maybe this will no longer be an issue.
When something is free, it's always worth a try.
