PlayStation gamers urged to download free GOTY contender while they can

PlayStation gamers urged to download free GOTY contender while they can

If you've got the points, spend them

This year’s The Game Awards nominations have landed.

Up for the coveted accolade of Game of the Year is Astro Bot, Balatro, Black Myth: Wukong, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Of course, everybody is up in arms over Shadow of the Erdtree’s nomination.

I would like to remind people though, that this is not a rule change to allow the DLC to be eligible for major awards this year.

DLCs have been eligible for several years now, with The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine winning Best RPG in 2016.

Debating whether it should win or not is, of course, expected but otherwise, it’s time to put the pitchforks away.

It’s incredible to see Balatro included as the game was made by one solo developer.

Well, did you know that with a bit of patience, you can actually nab Balatro for free?

Astro Bot nabbed the joint most nominations.

Balatro is one of the available redeemable titles on PlayStation Stars, Sony’s rewards scheme for PlayStation users.

You can earn points via purchases made on the PlayStation Store and by completing quick and easy campaigns.

If you save up enough points, you can nab free rewards.

Previously, that included free store credit although that option is disappearing for many users. Sony is still yet to release a statement.

Alongside that though, you can also redeem free full-length games - and Balatro is one example.

Right now, Balatro can be redeemed for 3,750 points.

It’s far from being the only game up for grabs, but it is the only GOTY nominee.

The thing is, Sony changes this line-up with no warning from time to time, so if you do have points sitting there, you may want to secure Balatro sooner rather than later.

If you do miss out, it’ll cost you £12.99 on the PlayStation Store.
