Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us series is one of Sony PlayStation’s flagship brands which garnered an influx of new fans following its HBO live-action TV series.
Over the years, Naughty Dog is no stranger to remasters. After all, we’ve seen it with the likes of The Last of Us Remastered, an enhanced version of the critically acclaimed PlayStation 3 game released in 2013 which arrived for PlayStation 4 in 2014. We’ve also had Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection for PS4 in 2015 as well as Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection for PC and PS5 in 2022.

Releasing in the same year as Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection was a full remake of Naughty Dog’s 2013 post-apocalyptic adventure, The Last of Us Part I. Unlike the 2014 remaster, The Last of Us Part I is a remake built from the ground up for the PlayStation 5.

Earlier this month, following months of speculation, Naughty Dog announced The Last of Us Part II Remastered for PlayStation 5. This remaster brings enhanced 4K visuals at a smooth 60fps as well as improved DualSense controller features over the original sequel’s free new-gen upgrade for PS5.
What’s more, it also comes with a roguelike mode called ‘No Return’, cut content from the original sequel with ‘Lost Levels’, a Guitar Free Play mode, director’s commentary and much more. Additionally, if you already own the PS4 version of The Last of Us Part II you can upgrade to the remaster for a mere £10/$10.
In terms of the new modes and cut levels, we do know that ‘No Return’ will have at least 12 levels with randomised challenges, as well as a variety of playable characters to choose from with unique sets of skills. At this time, we do not know what content will be in ‘Lost Levels’.
It’s been speculated that one of the reasons we're getting The Last of Us Part II Remastered is to capitalise on the hype of the upcoming second season of the HBO TV series. Not to mention it’s also the perfect excuse for devoted fans to play a better version of a game they love.

Naughty Dog chief and co-creator of both The Last of Us video games and HBO series, Neil Druckmann recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly and revealed that some of the scenes from the second season of the TV series will be adapted from cut The Last of Us Part II content.
“As a tease, I will say there is at least one element from a cut level that is planned [for] the show,” said Druckmann. “I say that with the caveat that we haven’t started filming the show yet and all things are subject to change based on what we ultimately feel will be best for the show.” We already know that season two will feature moments from The Last of Us Part II, but it’s believed that the content may be spread over at least two more seasons of the HBO series. A release date for the second season of the HBO series hasn't been announced just yet, but The Last of Us season two is expected to be released in 2025.
As for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, it will be released for PlayStation 5 on 19 January 2024.
