Star Wars Battlefront is fully back, and fans are thrilled

Strong, the Force is

In an unexpected comeback that many of us never saw coming, it seems that the Star Wars Battlefront series is having somewhat of a resurgence.

The Star Wars Battlefront series has been around since 2004 and for some, the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox generation represented the series at its peak, at least when it comes to pure multiplayer fun.

However, in 2015 and now owned by Electronic Arts, Star Wars Battlefront was released and it signaled a reboot for the series, and perhaps, it was the catalyst of its lowest point.

While Star Wars Battlefront looked lovely and captured the tone of the Star Wars franchise, it lacked depth when it came to maps, gameplay and character classes.

EA looked to correct all concerns of the 2015 game with Star Wars Battlefront II in 2017, which improved on its predecessor in almost every way, and even had a decent single-player campaign set between Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

Sadly, Star Wars Battlefront II was hindered by not only an XP grind that felt excessive and unfulfilling, but that grind’s purpose was to make in-game purchases with its egregious random loot box microtransactions.

EA and developers DICE did fix that grind and microtransaction implementation over time, but the damage was already done for Star Wars Battlefront II, or so we thought as recently, fans have been wondering whether we’ll get a third entry in the rebooted series.

In a surprising turn of events, Star Wars Battlefront II has seen somewhat of a revival on the PC platform Steam, as brought to our attention by theTwitter account, StayBombastic.

“Dude, I started playing again and got my friends to hop on too, it's so much fun,” replied LeafsMatrix to the tweet.

“I’m finding full lobbies in less than 30 seconds on OCE servers, which is absolutely unheard of in games like this,” said Krvwford.

“It warms my heart seeing Battlefront II gaining popularity in 2025. Been there since the beginning, it’s incredible how well the game looks being an eight-year-old game,” commented Mikey_Mele15.

According to Steamdb, at the time of writing, Star Wars Battlefront II has a 24-hour concurrent player peak of 7,816.

While 7,816 might not seem like a huge number at first, the game had its all-time peak in 2021 with 10,489 players. So, to have such a huge surge in players after four years is impressive nonetheless.

We don’t know what the concurrent player numbers for Star Wars Battlefront II are with PlayStation and Xbox, but it would be nice if they were in a similar ballpark.

Unfortunately, Star Wars Battlefront II does not have crossplay and it’s probably too late in its life cycle for EA and DICE to implement that feature but regardless of your platform, now might be the perfect time to revisit or play this game for the first time.
