Following its announcement yesterday, Kingmakers has taken the internet by storm with its zany trailer.

“This is the most insane game I have ever seen. Please watch until 23 seconds,” Twitter user seconds_ø wrote, amassing over 40,000 likes. “That’s some kind of all-time record plot twist at 23 seconds,” said another. I won’t spoil the surprise. It’s best that you let the trailer speak for itself.

Take a look at Kingmakers in action below.

Did you see it coming? Me neither. The first 23 seconds dupes you into thinking Kingmakers is your standard medieval strategy RPG before it suddenly turns into a war shooter set across time, complete with cars mowing down medieval troops. It’s thoroughly bizarre but kind of in the best way.

Developed by Redemption Road Games and set to be published by tinyBuild, Kingmakers will see you participate in enormous simulated battles set across a variety of eras. In that regard, it has the flexibility of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, albeit with gameplay comparable to Call of Duty. “Go back in time to a war-torn medieval era with a vast arsenal of modern weapons, change the course of history, and save the future in this epic action/strategy sandbox,” reads the synopsis. “Build your kingdom, grab a gun, and lead an army of thousands into massive, real-time simulated battles — solo or in co-op.”

The trailer’s clever twist has captured the attention of the masses. Considering this game was on no one’s radar, it’s impressive to see that Kingmakers’ announcement currently occupies the 19th trending spot on YouTube. It’s already been viewed over 300,000 times - and that’s gone up by at least 10,000 views just in the few minutes that I’ve been on the page.

Kingmakers is set to launch later in 2024, with a release date to be confirmed in the coming months.
