breaking news
Nintendo has done the unthinkable and finally unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2, after months of waiting, and its sneakily announced a new Mario Kart game in the process.
As if it just felt like it was the right time, Nintendo shared a trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 and confirmed a full-blown Nintendo Direct will go live 2 April.

Hands-on events will take place in the weeks afterwards around the world, and while that’s very exciting, something that’s also exciting is the fact we’re getting a new Mario Kart game.

Presumably called Mario Kart 9 unless there’s another title in mind, the game could be seen on the TV behind the Nintendo Switch 2, and despite knowing hardly anything about it we still think it looks incredible.
It gives off the same vibes that Super Mario Bros Wonder did with its artstyle, with Mario and his friends looking extra cartoon-y as they race around the track.
At the time of writing it’s unclear if there’ll be some sort of new gimmick for the game or whether it’ll just be a standard racer, but we’ll likely know soon enough when the Nintendo Direct rolls around.
To hazard a guess there’ll likely be a Direct for the console itself next, and then possibly a second Direct some time afterwards where more games are revealed for it, hopefully Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

For those still hooked on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe though fear not, as the Nintendo Switch 2 is confirmed to be backwards compatible, so you’ll get the best of both games if you decide to upgrade.
Stay tuned for more information over the coming months, as there’s clearly a lot more to be excited about regarding Nintendo’s next home console.
