Ever since we finally got the official lowdown on the Nintendo Switch 2’s specs, Grand Theft Auto VI fans have had one single question on their minds: is it powerful enough to run Rockstar Games’ upcoming megahit?
Well, it seems most of the fanbase is assuming the answer to that question is going to be a no.
Over on the r/GTA6 subreddit, fans have been mercilessly roasting Nintendo’s upcoming console in a thread detailing its potential release on the Nintendo Switch 2, as they believe the system doesn’t have the juice required to run it.

"People on the Nintendo sub were saying it's more powerful than the Series S. Where's the proof?" commented user solohack3r.
"We won't know til we see the amount of teraflops. But I'm guessing the Series S will still edge it out."
"At this point I'm pretty sure Nintendo switch 2 storage can't even hold GTA 6 to begin with," replied user Corvo_Attano-.
So… are they actually right? Is the Nintendo Switch 2 too weak to run GTA VI?

Well, the most straightforward answer is that we don’t know. We’re obviously working under the assumption that Grand Theft Auto VI, much like the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of GTA V before it, is going to push current-gen systems to their limits.
The specs for the Nintendo Switch 2 are impressive for a handheld, but they’re not on par with the likes of the Xbox Series X or the PlayStation 5.
If Rockstar Games is trying to eek out every possible scrap of performance from those consoles, an exact port for the Nintendo Switch 2 simply doesn’t seem feasible.
However, that doesn’t mean a port is truly impossible. As others have pointed out, the Nintendo Switch 2 is capable of running a somewhat downgraded version (when compared to the PS5/Xbox Series ports) of Cyberpunk 2077.

Now that won’t be a one-to-one comparison with GTA VI, but it’s hard to deny that it’s an impressive feat. With enough optimisation and a lower targeted framerate, it could be possible.
Either way, let’s wait and see how GTA VI fares on Sony and Microsoft’s current-gen systems before we even properly bother theorising about a Nintendo Switch 2 port.
