Animal Crossing players heartbroken as game quietly shut down

Sad times

Animal Crossing fans just keep losing, as first Animal Crossing: New Horizons gets left behind by Nintendo and now its pocket app is being closed down.

For those who didn’t know Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is a little companion app you can use in tandem with the games, or as a standalone island you can take care of on the go.

It was a decent little app, but now it’s being scrubbed away and will be gone by 28 November later this year.

Now before you jump to any conclusions or attempt to storm the Nintendo offices for revenge, there is a silver lining.

While the old version of Pocket Camp is being removed from the app store, it was confirmed a new version of the app is on the way.

It won’t be the same obviously as it won’t receive any additional support, but your existing save data will be transferable so you can keep your camp going well past the app’s official closure.

More information on this new “paid” version will be shared towards the end of the year, sometime during October.

Nintendo rounded off the announcement by saying “We would like to thank everyone who has supported the game since it launched.”

While Pocket Camp will survive, it’s still a sad occasion for fans of the series, but at least it won’t be gone for good.

As for the future of the Animal Crossing series there’s currently no news to share, as a successor to Animal Crossing: New Horizons is yet to be announced or even hinted at by Nintendo.

In all likelihood, a new Animal Crossing game will surface for the Nintendo Switch 2, and hopefully it’ll be a good one as while the previous instalment was a saving grace during COVID, it still left a lot to be desired.
