If you’ve ever wondered where the Deathclaws came from in Fallout, keep reading, as the truth is much worse than you’d think.

Fallout’s wastelands have given birth to some truly terrifying creatures, from giant insects, to feral ghouls and the topic of today's discussion, the Deathclaws.

If you’re thinking of booting up Fallout 4 for the very first time, there’s some important information you need to know below

Now as we all know Bethesda loves its lore, and you can find some pretty disturbing secrets buried deep in the Fallout games behind NPC dialogue, holotapes, terminals and more

However, while most of the secrets boil down to “Vault-Tec are the bad guys,” the origins of the Deathclaws are better hidden.

These beasts have been a thorn in the side of wasteland wanders since the first games, and they’re scheduled to make their live-action debut in the second series of the TV show, prompting a deep-dive from fans to find out where they came from.

In a Reddit thread by Bwitte94, it was said most creatures in Fallout games are mutated versions of normal animals, but the Deathclaw is far too monstrous to be just the product of dodgy radiation.

Turns out the Deathclaws predate the dropping of the bombs, and were “created before the Great War by the government to replace human troops in battle.” They were then experimented on further before eventually escaping into the wild following the nuclear blasts.

So whenever you’re playing a Fallout game and get torn apart by a pack of Deathclaws, just remember that was exactly what they were created for, so you’ve got to give them props for doing their job effectively.

As we’ve seen in the first season the Fallout TV show hasn’t been afraid to reinterpret the wider lore of the series, so perhaps in season 2 the origins of the Deathclaws will be explored further.
