In 2024, the fan-favourite Assassin’s Creed protagonist Ezio Auditore will have been dead for 500 years.

It’s no secret that Ezio is regarded as the best Assassin’s Creed protagonist. Even Ubisoft seems to agree as he’s been the start of several games in a series a character typically gets one time to shine.

Take a look at the Ezio trilogy below, playable for free if you have PlayStation Plus

He made gamers fall in love with his charm, finesse and skills in Assassin’s Creed II, before getting a second chance in the spotlight with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. Finally, he gained a third outing with the peak of the franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, thus concluding his story and creating one of the best trilogies in gaming history.

Aside from being the poster boy of the franchise, recently making yet another appearance in Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, he’s also well-known to those who haven’t played a single game in the franchise.

It’s this love for the character that has gamers everywhere paying their respects as if he was a real person, as by the time of writing he’s been dead for 500 years according to Assassin’s Creed lore.

This year, 2024, marks 500 years since his canonical death in 1524, and players far and wide are paying tribute to the man, the myth, and the legend.

A reddit post by theNiGHTMARE24 proclaimed “2024 is a landmark year for Ezio Auditore. 2024 will mark the 500th anniversary of Ezio Auditore's passing.” What followed was several fans commenting “Requiescat in Pace, Ezio”, paying homage to the line the assassin speaks at the end of each major assassination mission.

One player said: “As an unknown assassin Once said ‘Victoria Assassini ! May no one forget you mentore.’”

Leave it to gamers to treat a fictional character's death as if it were the real thing, though it is quite sweet in a way. Requiescat in Pace, Ezio.
