If there is one thing I’m going to do whilst playing a scary game, it’s scream so a horror game that restarts every time you do scream is my worst nightmare. That is the case for DON’T SCREAM, an upcoming “short horror experience” made on Unreal Engine 5.
DON’T SCREAM (spoiler, you probably will) is the latest photorealistic horror game from indie creators, Joure & Joe. “If you scream, you restart,” the official Steam synopsis reads. “The challenge: explore the forest for 18 minutes without screaming. The catch? Time only ticks when you move. It’s the perfect game to scare the pants off your friends and family. MICROPHONE REQUIRED!”

With a disclaimer accepting no responsibility for any underwear that “may become unusable should you play our game”, the sole purpose is to scare you silly. Similar to 2021’s Before Your Eyes which used player’s webcams to track their blinking, this appears to be a new and unique way to play games. However, instead of a webcam, DON’T SCREAM requires players to plug in their microphones causing any loud noises to restart the game. So I’d recommend not digging into your favourite crisps either.

Experienced in a 90s camcorder style, you are asked to explore the “mysterious Pineview Forest” within just 18 minutes. Sounds easy enough right? Not when it all depends on how quiet you can stay and how fast you can move. DON’T SCREAM promises “dozens of dynamic scares” with each playthrough promising a unique experience if you’re brave enough to go again. “It’s the perfect game to scare the pants off your friends and family. Our lead playtester (also my wife) is currently in a clinic recovering,” the developers write.
If you think you can take on the challenge, DON’T SCREAM is currently available in early access with a full release date planned for some time in 2023.
